OUR STORY

Our adoption story begins with a young McKenzie. I don’t exactly remember the moment, but know I was still living in Minnesota (so before age 13). I was obsessed with my Black baby doll. Sometime during those pre-teen years, God opened my eyes to the underprivileged kids & minorities, which created a passion in me for marginalized children (this lead me to mission work in Ukraine & Honduras). These experiences just solidified that God was preparing my heart for adoption. When Lincoln & I began talking about our future this was a topic that came up often. Thankfully, Lincoln was very open to adoption. With his blended family, he saw diversity in families as a positive experience. We knew whether we could have biological kids or not, we would want to add to our family through adoption at some point.

When we first began trying for our family, it came with some difficulty (which we now understand is fairly common, unfortunately). One miscarriage later & months of disappointment, we debated starting with adoption & working through biological children after. We started our research but it just didn't quite feel right. With a lot of praying & patience we got pregnant with Emelia.

Then came time to start talking about baby #2, we felt like God kept bringing adoption back up into the conversation. Amidst the pandemic I was very unsure if we could even start pursuing a homestudy. I had checked into a few Consultants I was researching and didn't see anything saying one way or the other about how it was affecting adoptions. Literally, that afternoon one of the Consultants posted on social media saying "Stuck at home? Now is a great time to schedule a consult call." I knew this was God initiating the last sign I needed to go for it. Ever since then we haven't looked back & are trusting Him with the details.

We will be adopting an infant from somewhere in the United States, with preference to a transracial child. We are working with Mustard Seed Adoption Consultants & using their guidance as we navigate through this process.
